JONATHAN CHERRY: What got you started with photography?
TONY KATAI: Back in 2005 a buddy of mine gave me an old nikon film camera, then everything blossomed up from that point.
JC: Any emerging artists inspiring you at the moment?
TK: I don’t follow too many photographers but I enjoy photographs from Brittany Nicole Fabry and Nathan Ward.
JC: Whats your current project all about?
TK: I’ve recently began filming a short film series, something along the lines of a futuristic horror theme.
JC: Where are you currently living and how is it shaping you?
TK: Detroit, MI; I moved out when I was 17 and i’ve been living here for just about 3 years now. New York & Chicago do not even compare to Detroit. It’s an urban jungle, full of great people and it doesn’t have the fast paced vibe of most major cities. Detroit is chill & a great place for any artist to grow.
JC: One piece of advice to recent photography graduates?
TK: Travel.
JC: Any big plans for 2012?
TK: Going to live in the mountains in a teepee all summer, while living a self sustainable lifestyle.
JC: Favourite tree?
TK: Palms
